BDIC Winter Online Classes

BDIC is offering two winter session online classes:

1. Writing for a Living. Taught by Stefan Petrucha, a prolific novelist.

2. Screenwriting. Taught by BDIC graduate and Hollywood screenwriter Tom Benedek.

BDIC Winter Dinner

We are excited to announce that the First Annual BDIC Winter Dinner will be taking place Wednesday, December 7th! This dinner is for the recognition of our sponsors and all the hard work they have done for us. This is also a great way to network with fellow BDIC students as well as professors. You could even find a potential sponsor! Come to the Marriott Room on the 11th floor of the Campus Center at 6pm for cocktail hour. A full, five-course meal will be served at 6:30pm. Best of all, it's FREE! Just make sure to RSVP by November 1st and remember to dress in a business casual style. This is going to be a fun night, so don't miss out! Internship with Localocracy

We're looking for a few more interns for this summer, and we'd love to bring in a few people from Isenberg or BDIC. The internship would primarily be in Boston, though some exceptional candidates may be able to do some work remotely.

“Localocracy was founded by UMass Entrepreneurship Initiative Alumni in 2009 and has spent the last year and a half building and launching a online platform to help individuals connect with their neighbors and local government. We have been featured on the White House blog, in the Wall St. Journal, and have won a number of start-up competitions including the Poynter Promise Prize in Entrepreneurial Journalism, and the Harvard College Innovation Challenge and Elevator Pitch competition, in addition to our initial funding from the UMass Innovation Challenge. We recently launched our civic platform in Arlington and Cambridge with our first major customer, the Boston Globe.

We recently raised funding from the investment arm of the John F. and James L. Knight Foundation, who felt our company was both financially viable, and supported their mission of building informed and engaged communities and advancing journalism in the digital age. This summer we will be beginning our nationwide expansion, and are looking for qualified interns (both Undergraduate and Graduate) to help us grow. Specifically we are seeking candidates with an interest in the future of government and journalism with experience in sales, marketing, finance or web development, and an interest in working in a high growth start-up.

Post a Summary of Your BDIC Concentration!

Look to the left of this website and you will see a list of concentrations. Students are posting their BDIC proposal, or a summary of it, by using this concentrations function.

To post your concentration, first register on the site. Then use the concentration function at the top of the page to add your profile. You may also include samples of your work.

Students have found that a public profile of their BDIC concentration can help them explain to employers how they designed their own major. This tends to impress employers because it shows student creativity and initiative.

$1,000 for summer research or internship

BDIC alumnus Gary Roth has generously created a summer scholarship for a BDIC student.

Students may apply for this $1,000 award and use it to fund a summer research project, or unpaid internship.

Applications are due to Linda Roney in the BDIC office, 607 Goodell, by April 25.

An application will consist of a description (no more than 500 words) of your summer research project or internship. Gary Roth wishes students to become familiar with some of the creative minds and leaders of the twentieth century. In this application cycle, students are encouraged, but not required, to discuss how their research project or internship relates to the ideas and career of Rosa Luxembourg.

(It is thus recommended that you look up Rosa Luxembourg and find a point of contact between your work and hers, and briefly describe this in your application.)

Gary Roth graduated from BDIC in 1978. He is the dean of graduate studies at Rutgers University, Newark.
