Educational Goals
Fashion is a volatile industry that combines art along with business. In order to survive in the fashion industry, one must possess artistic abilities and also have the ability to market a product. A major in Fashion Entrepreneurship will prepare me to enter the highly competitive fashion industry. This major also allows for exploring various different opportunities concerning socio-economic, humanitarian, and cultural goals.
To completely understand this fashion industry, it is crucial to have a strong background in different disciplines offered through the University of Massachusetts Amherst. My proposition is to combine courses from the Isenberg School of Management, the Communications department, and the Theater department. By taking business courses ranging from marketing to management, I will be able to explore and educate me in business strategies necessary to survive in the fashion industry. By taking communications courses, I will be able to gain a clear understanding of how advertising and media affect social, behavioral, and economic trends in a general audience. With BDIC I have wonderful opportunities to further study the fashion world by taking costume design courses through the theater department. This BDIC major will also allow for various different opportunities such as networking to make connections to attain future internships and long term careers.
Experiential Background
As a child, I grew up with a highly disciplined and hard-working parent who is my role model better known as my mother. My mother worked in a sewing company when I was about 4 years of age and I watched her make my clothes and various other garments by hand. When the company closed down, she sewed small dresses at home and sold them to interested customers. My mother also taught me the basic principles and techniques of sewing, crafting, embroidery, and making measurements. She kept emphasizing that if I keep practicing these skills, one day I will be successful. Fashion really interested me as a child and the interest is more than alive today, it transformed into passion for the fashion world. The idea of majoring in Fashion Entrepreneurship didn't occur to me until I spoke with an advisor in the BDIC Office.
Prior to speaking with an advisor, I thought it would be best to transfer to a fashion design college to gain a significant amount of understanding about the fashion world. Although that seemed to be the best decision at that point in my life, I realized that being a fashion designer requires a tremendous amount of sewing and flat pattern more than designing itself. I also saw how many people lost hope and dropped the fashion design major because of the amount of stress, the work involved, the financial situations, and the constant criticism. I also considered dropping fashion design completely mostly because of the scandals involved with that industry concerning the exploitation of young models and bad press with certain celebrities, but something deep inside me told me not to give up my dream, to continue to chase my passion.
By taking advice from my peers, I decided that the best way to succeed in the fashion industry is to gather a team of skilled fashion designers, pattern makers, seamstresses, merchandisers, marketers, web designers, developers, and organize events such as fashion shows where it would be possible to network and advertise in the fashion capitals and cities worldwide. I will incorporate as much diversity as possible; I will study the concepts of fashion to the best of my ability and also from other people's perspective. This involves exploring how fashion is relative to different cultures.
Continuing Aims
With opportunities through the BDIC program, I will gain tremendous amounts of knowledge and understanding. I will strive to take advantage of opportunities that are given to me and use them to pursue my professional career. The city seal of my hometown states that “Art is the handmaid of human good.” This particular quote continues to inspire me, not only to pursue my career, but also to serve the community. My vision is to combine a fashion entrepreneurship degree with my interest in charities for social justice.
