Geography and Social Justice in the Outdoors

I am studying different aspects of outdoor recreation including how humans view and use landscape in the Western world and why some people have access to outdoor recreation and others do not. Another aspect of my major is the effect of global politics and national parks management on people in terms of land use and human rights, and how outdoor enthusiasts fit into that scenario.
For example, what we know as Devil's Tower in Wyoming, or Mato Tipala, which means "Bear Lodge" in Lakota, is sacred to the Lakota. There is a voluntary ban on climbing in in June because many sacred ceremonies take place during that time, but some do not respect this and climb or hike anyway. In reality, the Lakota were there first and that is their land. They have been displaced to Rosebud Reservation, and the National Park service is in charge of management of Mato Tipila. Thus, whether or not people should be able to climb it, and who should govern the area has been a point of contention and arguments between outdoors enthusiasts, the US National Park Service and the Lakota.
After I graduate I would like to continue my education in New Zealand, on the West Coast, or Europe. And eventually I would like to get a job as a park ranger/interpreter or an outdoor recreation guide. I plan to apply my theories on social justice to the policies of the institutions I work for. In a white male dominated field this will be challenging but policies need to be amended. Women and people of color are traditionally intimidated by the presumed image of the white, male outdoor leader. This can be compared to many other professions where males are the main people in charge, or where they make more money. I want to help change this.
