Globalization Studies

The first decade of the 21st century has been an era of tumultuous change in almost every measure -- political, economic, social, and environmental.  And while the global interconnectedness of these spheres, i.e. globalization, is not a new phenomenon, there is growing evidence that this process is increasingly mismanaged, misrepresented and misinterpreted by the masses. I want to spend the rest of my education at the University of Massachusetts diagnosing specific issues related to globailzation how my actions can make a difference in addressing such issues. I want to be well prepared to live in and understand the globalized world that surrounds me and creating a major called "Globalization Studies" will allow me to hit the ground running when I enter the so called "real world." To narrow my focus, I will analyze the relationship between the urbanization, sustainability, food production and community development within the context of globalization. 

My curriculum proposal will draw from classes in departments ranging form Political Science, Economics, History, Geography, Landscape Architecture and Regional Planning, art and. Scholars trained in a single discipline are trained to think within a set of confines and while I would like to understand their approach, groundbreaking work often brings a fresh perspective to an old issue. By designing a curriculum that integrates complementary classes and departments, I believe that I can bring a fresh perspective on many issues plaguing the 21st century.
