International Health Development

International Health Development explores the roles culture, society, and politics play in determining the health of developing communities worldwide. Through this concentration I focused on understanding how health problems are interpreted and dealt with cross-culturally and how most problems—from malaria to heart disease and maternal mortality to HIV/AIDS—are rooted in social and economic inequalities. I also looked at the history of international development theory and practice in order to understand what developed countries and international agencies like the UN have done to solve health problems in developing countries, what has worked and failed, and how development strategies can be more effective. Through my various classes, independent studies, and study abroad experience, I have gained some of the knowledge and skills necessary to do research in the field of global public health and to become an effective community health worker. My post-graduation goals include getting a master’s degree in nurse-midwifery and starting a non-profit organization that addresses the maternal health concerns of a community at the grassroots level.

Culture, society, and politics do play a huge role in health development. Consider AIDS and HIV, which are common in Africa. I'm pleased to know that you're having fun as a global health worker. It's a rewarding job.
