International Real Estate and Entrepreneurship

Wednesday, April 21, 2010 Educational Goals
There are many things that I plan to accomplish while getting my degree in International Real Estate and Entrepreneurship through BDIC. Today many people try to make a career out of real estate but are not successful. I not only want to conquer the local real estate market, but also internationally. I feel the reason why people fail is because they lack essential skills such as noticing details about a home, relating to the client, and marketing their business efficiently. For an international real estate agent one needs all these skills plus they need to know international policy and relations. Taking selective classes through the BDIC department will supply me with a foundation of these skills, which I will then build upon through experience after graduation. These selective classes will be drawn mainly from the following departments: Marketing, Political Science, BMATWT, and Art History.
The education that I will achieve is very important, but is not the only component needed to create my major. I plan to receive my Real Estate license, and begin to practice the art of selling homes, or renting apartments during the summer of 2010 in New York City. Studying abroad and traveling during breaks will also be necessary to understand different cultures, and Real Estate markets. The last crucial part of using my time wisely during college, will be dedicated to building my network. I will do this by meeting as many influential people as I can, and develop a personal relationship with them in hopes of being directed to someone related to my desired career field. There is no other existing major offered at UMass that will allow me to achieve all these goals and receive credit for it. Taking a combination of classes in business, architecture, and international relations/foreign policy, can only be done though BDIC and no other majors allows me take my education into my own hands.
Continuing Aims
Graduating with a degree in International Real Estate and Entrepreneurship will give me the knowledge needed to become a successful International Realtor. My career in Real Estate will be progressive. Finishing a semester early will allow me to get a jump start on my career, or it will allow me to travel for a few months. Eventually with experience gained over the years and the education obtained from the major I created through BDIC, I plan on owning an International Real Estate Agency that works with Americans who want to invest or buy vacation homes in different countries. My Agency will take a different approach to dealing with clients who want to buy international property. Instead of referring clients to realtors in that country, my companies agents will be the only face the client will see in the buying/selling process. No other major offered at the University of Massachusetts will give me the education I need to pursue my desired career the day after graduation.
Experiential Background
My passion for selling International Real Estate is mainly due to the relationship I had with a good friend Stephanie Rahn, and the love for traveling. A few summers ago I had the opportunity to help Stephanie do some cosmetic work to some houses she purchased to flip. I quickly became fascinated by the process and the business of selling a home. Stephanie noticed my curiosity and allowed me to observe the steps needed to be taken in order to write up contracts, list the home, and etc. On a vacation in Scotland I began to notice my self eyeing properties for sale in the areas we traveled. It then hit me that a career in traveling around the world selling property to high cliental was the ultimate dream job. Taking classes in business and entrepreneurship fueled the fire to eventually own an International Real Estate Agency.
Methods and Procedures:
Three key aspects of International Real Estate is understanding the business and real estate, having the knowledge of international policy and relations, and the ability to price homes accurately. In order to target these different aspects I will be mainly drawing my classes from are, Marketing, Art History, Political Science and Building Materials and Wood Technology. I will be also be taking selective courses that can be applied towards my concentration, from Sociology, Communication, and Resource Economics. My curriculum consist of not only classes from a variety of departments, but also studying abroad, internships, and some independent studies in order to enhance my degree.
Through the School of Management, I will be focusing on the Marketing department which will begin to teach me about how to advertise and market my company to different population segments. This is an important skill because many real estate agents try market their homes towards the whole population, which results in wasting time and money. For example, if I obtained a house in Cancun Mexico, I would advertise to vacation home buyers who were in the age group from 21-39 years old. I would not waste resources in marketing to an older age group because the majority of the senior segment would not want to have a vacation home in a “hot tourism spot”.
Building an appreciation for architecture will allow me to price homes accordingly. For example if a home in Italy has a special structure to it that I could recognize as valuable, I could price the home as what its worth. Being able to accurately price a home is a skill that I feel many Realtors lack. Drawing classes from the Art History department geared towards Architecture along with classes from BMAWT will provide me a solid background to understand this process.
Study Abroad
Only taking classes at the University will not be sufficient enough to fulfil my concentration. My main focus on selling International Real Estate will be in London. I plan to study abroad there through the CAPA program in the fall semester of my senior year. I intend to take three classes towards my major while I am studying abroad, and take a six credit internship. I have selected to participate in the CAPA program because it places students at internships that are related towards their major. I feel that I will have a better possibility of obtaining a job through my internship because I will be well qualified for the job because of decision to major in BDIC.
